Basics of Lean (8 hour)

Offered in English and Spanish
Workshop overview:

Basics of Lean is a hands-on workshop that guides participants through the transition from a traditional manufacturing environment to a lean, world-class enterprise. By introducing and implementing Lean principles, your company can improve efficiencies, reduce waste, increase profitability and provide customers with high quality products at competitive prices. The end results are well worth your investment.  Participants in our workshops have reported significant results after implementing Lean principles in their own businesses, including:

• 90% reduction in lead times
• 85% reduction in work-in-process
• 85% improvement in quality
• 50% increase in productivity
• 50% reduction in floor space

What to expect:

Immerse yourself in an exciting scenario, as suppliers, customers and/or employees of a simulated electronic assembly factory. During the hands-on simulation you will apply Lean concepts, such as standardized work, visual signals, batch-size reduction and pull systems – designed to give you new tools to improve your business. We begin by manufacturing products in a chaotic, traditional manufacturing firm. The Lean principles are applied to the results of your first simulation. For the remainder of the day, we revisit the manufacturing environment and use the Lean techniques that have been presented.  You will learn the principles of Lean Manufacturing and how to apply them to your company. You will be able to identify the eight areas of waste and understand how to eliminate them, and you will understand how applying Lean principles can improve your bottom line.

 Who should attend:

Business and manufacturing leaders and anyone who would like to understand the basic Lean concepts and start on the road to Lean Manufacturing. Companies that are interested in reducing their inventory, improving their overall quality, improving their on-time delivery performance, improving their productivity, and lowering their manufacturing costs.

The workshop can accommodate 15-18 attendees.

Also Offered in Spanish

Overview of Lean (with Lego simulation)

The focus of this 4 hour workshop is to  educate/train employees in a short concentrated manner a number of the Basics of Lean Principles.   This training will help those participating to see how continuous improvement can be applied through the utilization of Lean concepts throughout the company.

Topics to be covered include
  • Lean Definitions (Lead time, Cycle time, Value Added vs non value added)
  • The 8 Wastes
  • Selected Tools from the House of Lean (i.e. 5S, Standard Work, Visual Control, POUS, Pull, Kanban.) The workshop can be modified to  include tools that you feel are important for your industry and operation
  • 2 rounds of Hands-on simulation (Legos)
  • An example of how to value stream a process and how to begin attacking real problems

This workshop is designed to accommodate 10 attendees

Executive Overview

Learn how  to create a successful Lean program and what is required by Leadership to achieve a successful program.  The goal of a Leadership briefing (or training) is alignment of training and company goals.

A Leadership briefing is strategic in nature (leadership, culture, style, communication) and tactical (an overview of Lean principles as they apply to your product and industry); the briefing prepares management for its role in the Lean deployment and helps us develop an overall strategy with leadership to bring about a successful implementation.

Lean Concepts/Tools and Lean Value

Effective Leadership training will inform management that Lean is not about point solutions; rather, it is a sustainable philosophy to improve the characteristics and performance of what a customer perceives as value.  Value is defined by the customer and a strategic component of the training will emphasize how to link Power One’s Lean programs with customer value.

Lean concepts that are important to highlight include:

·         Waste (the “right” waste)
·         Continuous flow, cycle time, just-in-time, TAKT time
·         Value stream and value stream mapping
·         Kaizen: Plan- Do-Check-Act
·         Supply chain as part of your value stream
·         Root cause analysis.

Lean Value

The challenge most companies confront when first starting their “Lean journey” is how to align the use of Lean tools and principles to achieve sustainable outcomes with company goals and objectives.  Proper alignment results in better performance witnessed by the customer, whether they are an end user, a supply chain member, a shareholder, or internal customer.

All employee’s activities are tied to the goal of meeting the customer’s definition of value.
